Service Management
This tile has one row for each service: Telnet, SSH, RLogin, FTP, Web, NNTP (news), BinkP and IM (inter-BBS messages). Each row shows a status dot, the name, the port, a status word and three buttons: Stop, Start and Restart. A line under the list reminds you what the buttons do.
Figure 1. Service Management. RLogin is not enabled, so only Start is available for it.
Show it with View > Service Management, or the Services quick action.
What the buttons do
- Stop closes the listening port and waits for the listener to end. It always asks first. Callers who are already connected are not dropped. The one exception is SSH: the built-in SSH server relays every session itself, so stopping it ends SSH callers. The confirmation tells you.
- Start opens the port again. It never asks.
- Restart stops and starts. It asks only when someone is connected.
Start and Restart re-read that service's configuration file, so a change made in PBConfig takes effect without restarting PBDispatch. The settings are re-read only while nobody is connected to that service. Otherwise the loaded settings are kept and the log says so.
Buttons that do not apply are dimmed. A running service has Start dimmed, and a service that is not running has Stop and Restart dimmed.
Status words
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Running | Listening. |
| Stopped | You stopped it. It stays stopped until you press Start or Restart. Closing and reopening PBDispatch returns every service to what its file says. |
| Port in use | Another program owns the port. See Troubleshooting. |
| Not enabled | The service's file says it is off. Switch it on in PBConfig and press Start. |
| Mailer not set up | BinkP is not configured. |
Good to know
- BinkP re-reads only its port and its
listensetting. The rest ofPBMAILER.CFGbelongs to the mailer program. - “Web” includes the in-browser terminal. “News” includes both the plain and the TLS ports. “SSH” includes the built-in server and the loopback bridge.
- Every action is written to the log as “Service Management: …”.
- If you changed a service that was not set up when PBDispatch started, such as the mailer, you may need a full restart of PBDispatch.
